NESRI Internship

08/11/09 | by BUCD [mail] | Categories: Nonprofit Internships, Policy Internships

NESRI works in partnership with communities to build a broad movement for economic and social rights, such as health care, housing, education, and work with dignity. Fundamental human needs create obligations on the part of government and the private sector to fulfill human rights. On this basis, NESRI advocates for universal and equitable policies in the United States.

The Human Right to Education Program:
The Human Right to Education Program at NESRI works in partnership with parent, youth and teacher organizations to promote policy change in U.S. public schools using human rights documentation, policy analysis and joint advocacy. NESRI believes that human rights offer a framework for transforming our schools based on internationally recognized standards of equity, accountability, dignity and community participation.

About This Internship Opportunity:
NESRI is seeking interns in New York City and Boston for Fall 2009. Intern responsibilities may include: 1) Research and writing to prepare fact sheets and other resources for the Dignity in Schools Campaign (DSC), a national coalition of advocates, organizers and educators working together to end abusive school disciplinary policies and the “pushout” of students (www.dignityinschools.org); 2) Outreach to parent, youth and teacher organizations around the country to expand membership of the DSC; 3) Participation in meetings and activities of the Student Safety Coalition in NYC to promote greater oversight over safety practices in NYC schools and promote positive models for discipline and safety. This is an unpaid internship.

Benefits:
The intern will gain knowledge of best practices for promoting positive school culture and discipline and develop a deep understanding of international human rights standards for the right to education. The intern will also build connections with education advocates, organizers and policy-makers around the country.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of and interest in human rights and public education policy in the U.S.
Experience working/interacting with grassroots organizations.
Strong research and writing skills.
Website maintenance skills are a plus.
